Magura Cave Paintings in Present Day Bulgaria
Dating Back to the Late Epipaleolithic Age.
We owe the gods so much
for they keep us safe and alive
Without their help and protection
we could not possibly survive.
The spirits of the moon and stars
watch over us at night
They ward off cave bears and hyenas
until the morning light
The spirits of the animals and plants
give nourishment to usHunting and gathering
to live is a must
To thank these wondrous spirits
we have no choice but to show
Our gratitude by illustrating Magura Cave’s walls
with paint made from bat guano
And here in these caves we gather
men and women, young and old
Religious rituals like those for fertility are completed
while sacred liturgies are told
Here in these caves we paint, in order for
our believes and traditions to be kept
So that the gods provide us with everything we need during life
and everything we need for after death.
